WHAT IS BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD / EUPD)

Do you ever feel like your emotions are on a wild rollercoaster? Does fear of abandonment colour your relationships, or do intense mood swings leave you feeling constantly misunderstood? If so, you might be wondering if Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), could be the reason behind these struggles.

BPD is a mental health condition that affects how you perceive yourself and interact with others. People with BPD often experience intense emotions that can shift rapidly. Imagine feeling extreme happiness one moment and then crashing into anger or sadness the next. This emotional volatility can make relationships challenging, as the intense fear of abandonment can lead to clingy behaviour or dramatic outbursts.

However, BPD is not a life sentence. With the right treatment, you can learn to manage your emotions and build healthy, stable relationships. If you suspect you or someone you know might have BPD, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. There is hope for a calmer, more fulfilling life.

Find out more about our full programme DBT for BPD or EUPD in Guildford and online by getting in touch and booking your free 15 minute consultation.

What causes BPD?

LeftFlower
  • GENETICS: Studies suggest a possible genetic predisposition to BPD. If close family members have BPD or other mental health conditions, it may increase the risk.
  • BRAIN ABNORMALITIES: Research indicates that some brain regions involved in mood regulation and emotional control might function differently in people with BPD.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Traumatic experiences, particularly during childhood, can be a significant risk factor. This could include abuse (emotional, physical, or sexual), neglect, or unstable living environments.
  • INVALIDATING ENVIRONMENTS: Growing up in an environment where your emotions and experiences are dismissed or invalidated can contribute to difficulties managing emotions and forming healthy relationships.

It’s important to remember that BPD is not caused by a single factor. The complex interplay of these elements likely influences the development of the disorder.

Signs of BPD

  • Emotional ups and downs: Feelings can switch quickly between happiness, sadness, anger, or fear.
  • Unstable relationships: Difficulty maintaining healthy and stable connections with friends, family, or partners.
  • Taking risks: Acting impulsively without considering the consequences, like spending sprees or dangerous activities.
  • Hurting yourself: Self-harm as a way to manage overwhelming emotions.
  • Thoughts of suicide: Feeling hopeless or like you want to end your life.

How can BPD impact my life?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) can have a significant impact on many aspects of your life, including:

  • Relationship struggles: Intense emotions or fear of abandonment might cause others to pull away.
  • Low self-esteem: You might have a negative view of yourself and struggle to feel good about yourself.
  • Strong emotions take over: It can be hard to control anger, sadness, anxiety, or feeling empty.
  • School/work challenges: Focusing and getting along with others might be difficult.
