Regain Control with OCD Psychotherapy

What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that causes repeated unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and urges to perform certain rituals (compulsions). These rituals are often done to try to get rid of the obsessions, but they only provide temporary relief. In severe cases, OCD can interfere significantly with a person’s daily life.

How to recognise OCD

There are a few signs that someone might have OCD:

  • Having unwanted and intrusive thoughts that cause distress or anxiety
  • Feeling the need to repeat certain behaviours (compulsions) in order to reduce anxiety
  • Spending a significant amount of time each day on obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviours
  • Having difficulty functioning at work, school, or in social situations due to OCD

What can you do to help yourself without therapy?

If you think you might have OCD, there are a few things you can do to help yourself without therapy:

  • Learn about OCD: The more you know about OCD, the better equipped you will be to manage it. There are many resources available online and in libraries.
  • Challenge your obsessions: When you have an obsession, try to challenge the thoughts and beliefs that are associated with it. Ask yourself if your thoughts are realistic and if there is any evidence to support them.
  • Resist compulsions: One of the best ways to reduce the power of compulsions is to resist them. This can be difficult, but it is important to do in order to break the cycle of OCD.
  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms: There are a number of healthy coping mechanisms that can help you manage OCD symptoms, such as relaxation techniques and exercise.

  • Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a type of CBT that can help you reduce your anxiety by gradually exposing yourself to the things you fear and resisting the urge to perform compulsions.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a type of therapy that can help you accept your thoughts and feelings without letting them control your behaviour.
