Anxiety and the root causes of it

To understand how anxiety therapy works and how it can transform and change people’s lives for the better, we first must explore the root causes. Anxiety comes in many different forms and presents differently based on the individual. Some of the more common symptoms include:

Stress that can result from work, school or a personal relationship – We are all prone to this at some point in our lives, whether it be a romantic partner, family member or a work colleague.

Emotional trauma – This could be something that happened when you were a child. Perhaps abuse, both emotional and psychological. Even something like a gory film that you watched when you were too young.

Financial concerns – With the cost of living currently a lot of people will be under financial duress. Losing your job, or a gambling issue are also symptoms. Money issues can feel very embarrassing and restrictive but they are very common

Stress caused by a chronic or serious medical condition – Chronic disorders are harder to manage as usually there is a chemical imbalance that causes it. With a positive mindset, appropriate therapies and medication all symptoms can be managed and reduced

A major event or performance – Perhaps someone close to you has recently passed away or you may be adversely affected by world events. The events in Turkey/Syria as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine can have an overbearing impact on our lives. Media is 24/7 now too so it’s hard not to see these things

Side effects of certain medications – While medications may have unintended side effects, it’s possible to find relief by changing the prescription or learning how best to manage those symptoms.

Drinking and substance abuse – Over time, this can lead to a vicious cycle of negative thoughts and behaviours. It is essential that individuals struggling with dependencies and compulsive behaviour obtain the help they need in order to break this pattern of destruction.

Lack of oxygen – Not having enough oxygen, whether literally or metaphorically, can have a devastating effect on our thinking capacity and logical reasoning. These effects are only made worse when in crowded areas or feeling confined to one place.

Types of treatment for anxiety

There are a few ways that you can eradicate and manage the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety disorders. Sometimes help starts at home so you should try to help yourself as much as is feasible.

For example, daily exercise has shown time and again to be a key positive element to mental well-being. A healthy body goes hand in hand with a healthy mind. Whether it’s a trip to the gym or merely a walk into town, over what you would normally do, this will help.

Accompanying exercise is of course eating a healthy diet. Fast food or processed foods don’t have the necessary vitamins and minerals we need. This is particularly true of brain function, so look at what changes can be made to the food you are consuming.

Are you getting a good amount of sleep? 8 hours a night is ideal but at worst creating a sleep schedule, getting ready for bed earlier and switching off phones and TV earlier will all improve mental health. Sleep deficiency is linked to the degradation of people’s mental and physical well-being.

Practising relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation can be vital in improving anxiety. Creating a calm atmosphere, proper breathing and working on stretches and flexibility.

Stop smoking and consuming caffeinated drinks. Try decaf options instead.

Accompanying these self-help tools, if the problem persists or gets worse then get in touch with your local GP or mental health professional. They will work in tandem with self-help to create a holistic solution and set you up for sustainable and long-term success.
