What Is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy. It focuses on balancing opposites and combining different views to overcome extreme thinking patterns.

DBT targets specific symptoms by setting clear, client-defined goals to address harmful behaviours. It increases emotional and cognitive regulation by identifying triggers and teaching coping skills to manage reactions to events, thoughts and feelings.

Who Does DBT Help?

LeftFlower

DBT is the gold-standard treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD).

It’s effective for anyone struggling with:

  • compulsive behaviours
  • emotional regulation
  • suicidal thoughts
  • self-harm

Our experienced team has extensive experience and a great success rate in using DBT to treat BPD and other behaviours. By the end of treatment, many patients experience immense life changes far beyond what they imagined possible at the start.

Our DBT Programme

Our DBT programme currently takes place online, and we have an additional adolescent DBT service that runs both online and in our clinic in Guildford.

DBT Skills: Group Sessions

Our DBT Skills group sessions are classes that take place online.

Therapists will teach you DBT skills directly from the Linehan skills training manual, using exercises, group activities, reflections and ‘homework’ to practice these skills in everyday life.

Over the course of the programme, we cover a number of key modules, including mindfulness skills, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal skills.

We run DBT Skills groups for adults and adolescents each week.

DBT: Individual Sessions

Our DBT programme includes weekly one-to-one 50-minute sessions both online and in person in Guildford, Surrey.

These individual sessions help you to reduce impulsive behaviours and reach your therapy goals by learning new skills.

There is a wealth of evidence to support DBT’s success when treating BPD (Linehan et al., 1991, 2006 and 2015).

The full programme’s blend of skills training and individual sessions is often the most effective solution.
