Understanding ADHD

LeftFlower

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain processes attention, activity levels and impulse control. It often presents in three key ways:

  • Inattentive type: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, disorganisation or being easily distracted.
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive type: Restlessness, excessive talking, difficulty sitting still, or acting without thinking.
  • Combined type: A mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Many people with ADHD experience:

  • Struggles with focus and concentration
  • Difficulty starting or completing tasks
  • Impulsivity and acting without thinking
  • Forgetfulness, disorganisation or time management issues
  • Emotional overwhelm, frustration or mood swings
  • Restlessness and difficulty relaxing
  • Challenges with self-esteem and feeling misunderstood

With the right assessment, diagnosis and treatment, individuals with ADHD can learn to manage symptoms, build confidence and thrive in daily life.

When to Seek an ADHD Assessment

If you suspect you or your child may have ADHD, a professional assessment can provide clarity and guidance on the next steps.

You may benefit from an ADHD assessment if:

  • You struggle with focus, impulsivity or hyperactivity, making daily life challenging.
  • You have a history of academic or workplace difficulties related to attention and organisation.
  • Emotional regulation feels difficult, leading to frustration, outbursts or mood swings.
  • You find it hard to manage time, complete tasks or stay organised.
  • You suspect ADHD but have never been formally diagnosed.
  • Your child’s teachers have raised concerns about attention, behaviour or learning.

A psychiatric ADHD assessment provides a clear diagnosis and tailored treatment plan, ensuring you receive the right support and interventions.

  • Developmental History: Symptoms from childhood and how they’ve changed over time.

Standardised ADHD Rating Scales & Diagnostic Tools

Our psychiatrists will give you evidence-based questionnaires to complete.

These are used to assess attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity and emotional regulation.

You may also need to ask family members, teachers or partners to fill in these questionnaires. By gathering information from several parties, our psychiatrists can build a full picture of your symptoms.

  • Discuss treatment options, including therapy, coaching, lifestyle strategies and medication if appropriate.

Following the assessment, you’ll receive a clear and structured plan to help you move manage your ADHD.
