WHAT IS POSTNATAL DEPRESSION?

Being a mum is hard, whether it’s your first or fifth time. The lack of sleep, changes in identity and lack of time for self-care can feel overwhelming. For some, having a baby can feel overwhelming and they may start to experience symptoms of depression.

Postnatal depression (sometimes referred to as postpartum depression) differs from typical depression because it occurs in the 12 months after birth. Interestingly around 70% of all new mums will experience the baby blues, however 10% of new mums will experience a more pervasive period of low mood along with physical symptoms starting within 1-2 months of birth

WHEN TO SEEK HELP?

Our expert team treat postnatal depression daily from our online clinics and in our depression therapy clinic in Guildford, Surrey.

Just like with any other disorder or illness there is no single reason that can be attributed to every case of postnatal depression. However, some possible causes include:

  • previous mental health issues, either before or during pregnancy
  • history of postpartum depression following previous pregnancies
  • birth trauma
  • a poor support system

If you notice any of these symptoms ask for help immediately:

  • you are feeling immense sadness or anger most of the time
  • you don’t feel able to leave the house and struggle to get up in the morning
  • you are preoccupied with thoughts of harming yourself or the baby
