Behavioural therapies

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It incorporates an examination of your thoughts with a behavioural approach.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy - DBT is a therapy designed to help people change patterns of behaviour that are not effective, such as self-harm, suicidal thinking and substance abuse. The approach works towards helping people increase their emotional and cognitive regulation by learning about the triggers that lead to reactive states and helping to assess which coping skills to apply in the sequence of events, thoughts, feelings and behaviours that lead to the undesired behaviour. It is often particularly helpful for the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder.

Individual sessions are usually once weekly and last 50 minutes.

Individual CBT and DBT is available in Guildford and Godalming. Skype sessions and phone consultation are also available.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy starts with a focus on the unconscious and past experiences, which may determine current behaviour, thoughts and feelings. This approach offers an opportunity for clients to explore:

  • What's happening at the moment - how you do things and the part you play in things

  • What has happened in the past - how the past can affect current feelings and thoughts

  • How you may best cope in the future

Psychodynamic therapy aims to help people with psychological issues to understand and change complex, deep-seated emotional and relationship difficulties, reducing symptoms and alleviating distress. However others seek therapy due to more general and underlying feelings of depression, difficulties concentrating, dissatisfaction, or relationship difficulties.

Sessions are usually once or twice weekly and last 50 minutes. Individual psychodynamic therapy is available in Guildford and Godalming.

Mindfulness-based Cognitive therapy

MBCT is  a psychological therapy which uses traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy methods and combines psychological strategies of mindfulness and mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness involves a focus on becoming aware of all incoming thoughts and feelings and accepting them, but not attaching or reacting to them. It also gives people a greater awareness of their own body, helping them to become more aware of emotional states, and thoughts.

MBCT has been proven to be helpful to people with a range of issues, such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, chronic fatigue and insomnia. It is also recommended by NICE as a effective treatment for recurrent depression.

Individual sessions are usually once weekly and last 50 minutes.

Group and individual mindfulness is available in Guildford and Godalming. Skype sessions and phone consultation are also available.
